Hi I'm a US citizen and have around 15k or less credit card debt. All government loans were paid off. Something happened three and a half years ago in my home town and I had to leave Washington state and took care of it. So my question is: it's has been 3 and a half year and I'm heading back to washington state for short visit.
    1. I'm sure the debt did gall into collection agency. Will it go to court?
    2. Since I had been gone since 2007 and will there be a warrant on me since I didn't appear to court (if there was one)
    3. I will be entering Vancouver bc airport then to Seattle by driving. I'm afraid I will get caught for warrant at the border.

Hopefully someone can answer my questions and thanks for the help in advance.

Immigration activists say they are hopeful that Gov. Deval L. Patrick will support proposals in an advisory report calling for more English classes for the states immigrants and in-state tuition for undocumented college students. Patrick released the report containing 131 recommendations, which he called a values statement, at a luncheon for immigrant advocates.

Since July 2008, resident immigrants and activists have crowded meetings around the state pressing for those programs and others, including allowing immigrants to get state drivers licenses.

Illegal non-immigrants did the rally to local USCIS offices. It would be good if we pick one day in 2nd week of July and have a rally to local USCIS offices. This will immediately catch the media attention.

Rally news should be spread out to media so we can get enough coverage?

Let's discuss if you guys like this idea.

The early retirement of US Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) has opened up an appointment opportunity for Governor Charlie Crist, himself a candidate for Martinez's seat. Crist will likely not appoint himself and a number of names are circulating for potential replacements. According to Politico, one person being considered is Jacksonville-area State Representative Jennifer Carroll. Carroll would be the first black female Republican Senator if she were selected. Carroll is a native of Trinidad and a retired US Navy officer. Carroll's immigration positions aren't clear from her record, not exactly a surprise given that state legislatures don't consider very many immigration...

    Hello,
I am currently on L1 individual extension in US.
I will be traveling to India shortly for 2 week vacation. I will be attending the visa interview for stamping at Chennai before my return to US.

Can someone tell me/share what are the chances of visa getting stamped? What kind of questions to expect?

I hope that since i am already on extension in US, visa stamping is just a formality at US embassy?

    Please let me know ASAP.

    Thanks.

Senate Comity Slips Away (http://www.rollcall.com/issues/53_9/news/19453-1.html) By Emily Pierce and Erin P. Billings, ROLL CALL STAFF, July 19, 2007

Though tensions between Democrats and Republicans have been festering since the beginning of the 110th Congress, this weeks Senate debate on the Iraq War has pushed the chamber to a new level of partisan acrimony, where even the most seasoned and collegial of Senate elders have abandoned traditional acts of decorum.

The Senate is spiraling into the ground to a degree that I have never seen before, and Ive been here a long time, Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said. All modicum of courtesy has gone out the window.

That statement came after a highly charged, all-night debate on a Democratic amendment to refocus the U.S. mission in Iraq and complete a troop drawdown by April 30, 2008. The amendment failed, 52-47, to get the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster, and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) cited the Republicans obstructionist tactics in his decision to scrap the entire debate on the Defense Department authorization bill.

Reids insistence not only on having repeated votes this year on pulling out of Iraq but also on having the overnight session contributed to the explosion of partisan tensions, some Senators said.

I do think 36 hours with no sleep and the orchestration of a repeat debate of what we just got through two months ago weighed heavily on everybody, Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) said. It was what it was, but theres a lot of frustration. Its a good time for a four-week break.

Senate Republicans said the clearest evidence that the chambers traditional comity has evaporated is in Reids repeated decisions to prohibit GOP Senators from giving short speeches when they object to his unanimous consent requests. Reid first began using the tactic against a handful of GOP conservatives during last months bitterly fought immigration reform debate.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), the most recent victim of that tactic, gave an indignant speech on the floor Wednesday to protest what he said was Reids lack of respect for fellow Senators.

Though Specter acknowledged that Senate rules do not afford lawmakers the right to give speeches following unanimous consent requests, the veteran Pennsylvania moderate said, It has been common practice in this body to allow a Senator who reserves the right to object to make a statement as to why the objection is being lodged.

Specter went on to ominously state that Reids insistence on the rules could come back to haunt him.

Those practices I think are not only rude, but dictatorial, he said. And if those technical rules are applied and any one of us can do it this body will cease to function.

Republican sources said that beyond Specter, both Lott and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) were taken aback this week when they were denied recognition typically afforded the minority. Lott and Specter Senators who often work with Reid and Democrats on the floor and on legislation were particularly incensed with what they viewed as Reids disregard of Senate decorum and protocol.

Specter said that Lott declined Reids offer to publicly apologize.

One senior Republican aide said Reid by refusing to allow GOP Senators the opportunity to answer him when addressed sent a clear signal to the minority of, To heck with you, your views dont matter.

Not only is violating common courtesy unlike him, its not conducive to running the Senate in an effective manner, the aide said of Reid.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who led the GOP debate on the Defense measure, said what occurred over the course of the past two days and the past two weeks demonstrated that the climate here is very bad and is part of the whole environment of the Senate these days. The Iraq War is just one factor contributing to the heightened partisanship in the chamber, McCain added.

But it isnt just Republicans who are complaining about the breakdown of the chambers otherwise civil atmosphere. Senate Democrats countered that they also have been on the receiving end of what they consider ungracious behavior by their GOP colleagues.

In what appeared to be a slap at Democrats on Wednesday, McConnell turned his back on Reid and the Democratic side of the chamber while speaking about the Democratic amendment to refocus the U.S. mission in Iraq.

McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said the Minority Leader was simply addressing his fellow Republicans as he often does when many are gathered in the chamber. More than 70 Senators roughly half Republicans, half Democrats were present for the post-vote debate.

But Senate Democrats have said repeatedly that they are being forced to use heavy-handed tactics because the minority refuses to adhere to the traditional courtesy of allowing the Majority Leader to conduct the bulk of the Senates business without first having to file procedural motions to limit debate. Republicans have objected to a little more than half of Reids requests to begin debate on both controversial and bipartisan bills, resulting in Reid having to file time-consuming cloture motions to cut off prospective filibusters.

Whos been asking for these cloture votes? asked an exasperated Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Republicans.

McConnell has lost control of his caucus on this matter, Durbin said of what he believes is McConnells inability to convince conservatives in the Republican Conference to pick their battles.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley declined to comment specifically on why Reid has been prohibiting GOP Senators from making short objection speeches, but he indicated that Democrats need to fight back against the GOPs blocking strategy.

Its become pretty evident in recent weeks that theres been a decision by the Republican leadership to block the Senate from doing all but the most routine and noncontroversial legislation, Manley said.

Meanwhile, debate on the Defense bill has stopped for the time being, with Reid saying he would bring it back up once it is possible to pass a Defense authorization bill, but with a deadline dealing with Iraq.

For the moment, Democrats have been able to put a lock on the Republicans procedural objections by bringing up a higher education reconciliation bill that is privileged under the rules and cannot be filibustered. But that measure was taken up only after Republicans blocked Reid from quickly beginning debate on a Homeland Security spending bill.

Reid has tasked Durbin with negotiating a deal with Lott, McCain and Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) on how to resume consideration of the Defense measure.

However, McCain questioned whether the DOD bill would rear its head again in the next two weeks: Without a certain level of cooperation its almost impossible. It will be difficult to make it out in time, make it out by August. And the fiscal year ends the first of October.

I'm Cuban and I met my wife while on a trip to the island. I brought her over to the states on a K1 visa. Unfortunately things did not work out between us. Now she is going back to the island for a while and plans to come back. She still has not been here the 1 year and 9 months she's required to stay married to me in order to fulfill all of the K1 visa requirements.

My question is; if she leaves the states and we have divorced, will she be able to re-enter the states?

Let me know if more info is needed.

Any advice/suggestion/counseling will be most appreciated.

    Thank you in advanced.

Taxes, Health Lead Hill Agenda (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/30/AR2007093001617.html?hpid=topnews) After Iraq Fight, Both Parties Welcome Shift By Jonathan Weisman | Washington Post Staff Writer, October 1, 2007

Out of a political stalemate over Iraq, domestic policy is surging to prominence on Capitol Hill, with Republicans and Democrats preparing for a time-honored clash over health care, tax policy, the scope of government and its role in America's problems at home.

The brewing veto fight this week over an expanded children's health insurance program is only the most visible sign of the new emphasis on domestic issues. Democratic White House hopefuls are resurrecting a push for universal health care while talking up tax policy, poverty and criminal justice. Democratic congressional leaders are revisiting Clinton-era battles over hate crimes and federal funding for local police forces.

The White House, at the urging of congressional Republican leaders, is spoiling for a fight on Democratic spending. And GOP leaders are looking for any opportunity for confrontations on illegal immigration and taxation.

At the heart of it all is a central question: Thirteen years after the 1994 Republican Revolution, has the country turned to the left in search of government solutions to intractable domestic problems?

Democrats think that the answer is yes. "As conditions deteriorate, Americans are asking, 'Who can make it better? Where can we look for help?' And not surprisingly, government is increasingly the answer," said Peter Hart, a Democratic pollster.

Even Republicans see a growing unease as the driving force in the domestic policy resurgence.

"There's no question the economy is good, but it's not a good for everybody," said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio.). "When you look at family incomes, there hasn't been much rise. But there has been increased health-care costs, increased energy costs. They're nibbling up more than the family budget. It just drives more concerns."

For both parties, domestic policy fights are a welcome break after three election cycles dominated by terrorism and war. Republican and Democratic political leaders say they cannot shy away from the Iraq war. But for much of the year, the fight over the war has only shown Democrats to be ineffectual and Republicans to be intransigent.

For Democrats, a break in that fight could allow them to focus on issues that voters say demand attention. Last year's election victories by Democratic Sens. James Webb in Virginia and Jon Tester in Montana, and by Democratic governors in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa and Ohio, show that a populist message can prevail even in swing states.

For Republicans, changing the subject is simply a relief.

"I think it is territory that tends to unite us more," said Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.). "Republicans tend to squabble, but when it's fiscal issues, when it's economic issues, we tend to come together. That's what makes us Republicans."

If so, the GOP may be having an identity crisis. Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and President Bush have met regularly on what Boehner calls his "rebranding" initiative: winning back for the GOP the mantle of fiscal discipline and limited government.

But in the first big domestic battle on Capitol Hill, 18 Republicans in the Senate and 45 in the House abandoned their leaders to side with the Democrats on a five-year, $35 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

House Republicans are expected to muster enough votes to sustain Bush's anticipated veto of the SCHIP bill, but Boehner conceded that Congress is liable to override the promised veto on a $21 billion water-project bill so crammed with home-district projects that it has been denounced by taxpayer and environmental groups alike.

"There's deadlock on Iraq. Bush is intransigent. It's clear we're not going to get the 60 votes to change course on the war. But Republicans are hurting too, so they're breaking with him on all these domestic issues," said Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Indeed, on the domestic front Republicans may be in the same bind that they face on foreign policy: Their conservative base is not where the rest of the country is.

For more than a decade, the Democratic polling firm Hart Research and the Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies have read two propositions to Americans: "Government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people" and "Government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals."

In December 1995, at the height of the Republican Revolution, a less-intrusive government won out, 62 percent to 32 percent. This month, a more activist government won out, 55 percent to 38 percent. Independent voters sided with government activism, 52 percent to 39 percent.

But Republican voters, by a margin of 62 to 32 percent, still say government is doing too much.

"The big tectonic plates of American politics are shifting, and the old Republican policies of limited government aren't working like they used to," Schumer said. "Their problem is, the Republican primary vote is still the old George Bush coalition -- strong foreign policy, cut taxes, cut government, family values. But Americans aren't there anymore."

But the same poll did find some hope for the GOP, said Neil Newhouse, a partner at Public Opinion Strategies. Americans said they do not see a role for the federal government in the current mortgage crisis.

"Americans seem to be saying that the problems the country is facing demand a more activist government, but that this does not extend to all issues or every problem," Newhouse said.

That's a difficult needle to thread, but it can be done, said former senator Jim Talent (R-Mo.), a top domestic policy adviser to Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney. Then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush showed in 2000, with his stand on education and his general slogan of "compassionate conservatism," that Republicans can win on traditional Democratic turf. They can do that again, especially on health care, Talent said.

"Part of what is at the core of the party is smaller government, fiscal restraint," said Sen. Mel Martinez (Fla.), general chairman of the Republican National Committee. "But like in this debate on SCHIP, it's very important that we as Republicans make it clear we are for insuring children."

"It's no longer permissible for us to think 47 million Americans being uninsured is okay," Martinez said.

This is what, I saw on Ron's forum. We would need to continue what IV has been suggesting since long .....

Can USCIS be sued for picking files in random ( the only time they budge is when a federal judge put an order ).

Ron Gotcher: Anyone can be sued for anything. In the absence of a large, well funded group of plaintiffs, however, I don't see this kind of suit going anywhere. For now, the remedy is Congress. Organize a group to initiate a letter writing campaign to Congress. Write to your own Congressman, your two Senators, and the chairs of the Senate (Kennedy) and House (Loftgren) immigration sub-committees. Get the facts straight and offer as much emprical evidence as possible. If Congress were to receive 100,000 such letters, they would definitely do something about this problem.

It's hard not to watch in amazement as protesters from across Iran are managing to get videos and pictures out to the world of their fight for liberty despite the fact that most journalists are barred from reporting. They are using communications technology as their weapon against the regime and the camera phone has been at the center of it all. Two years ago I honored Philippe Kahn on this site as my immigrant of the day. Kahn, a French immigrant to the US, invented the camera phone in 1997 so that he could take pictures of his new child...
